Asthma Remedies - Is There Any Relief Other Than Medication?

Asthma remedies are needed now more than ever. Asthma has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Asthma is a respiratory ailment in which the throat and lungs constrict, making it difficult for a person to breathe.

In its mildest form, this condition, which manifests itself as recurring attacks, is uncomfortable; at its worst, it can be life-threatening. Most people with asthma are constantly battling congestion in their lungs. Asthma can occur in anyone, but it is most prevalent during childhood and early adulthood.

The term asthma is from the Greek word for ‘panting’ and means attacks of difficult breathing. It can either be acute or chronic. The various symptoms associated with asthma are coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

Common Causes of Asthma

  • Allergy to pollen, dust mites
  • Air pollution
  • Respiratory infections
  • Non-specific hyper-irritability
  • Sulfites in food
  • Certain medications
  • Exhaustion

There are many medications that are used to control asthma-related symptoms and outbreaks. These prescription medications are well researched and very effective; however some individuals prefer to use natural asthma remedies to control their symptoms.

Natural Asthma Remedies

Below you will find listed some natural herbal health products as well as other natural products that are the most common natural asthma remedies. I’ve also included a few herbal tea mixtures and a throat spray to help with breathing.

There are two great pre-made herbal remedies which we really love and highly recommend. BioVent Drops, in combination with BronchoSoothe. These two products are produced by Native Remedies. Many of my clients have had wonderful success with them.

Bee Pollen - Bee Pollen is very beneficial to asthma sufferers, as well as great booster for a number of things. If you only ever add one supplement to your diet, this is a great one to choose. The benefits are plentiful.

Fish Oil – Used for anti-inflammatory purposes. These may be taken in liquid or capsule form. Be careful if you have any known food allergies, as fish oil may cause significant and severe reactions.

Magnesium supplements – Magnesium works with the muscles in the body to increase relaxation and prevent tightening of the muscles around the air passageways.

Antioxidants – These may include green tea supplements, acai , vitamin E and selenium and other products that are designed to minimize the free radicals in the human system. Free radicals are often the cause of colds, coughs and other respiratory problems that can increase the irritation of the respiratory system.

Chamomile, rosemary, spearmint, thyme and cloves - Contain many antioxidants and also work to increase the relaxation of muscles, as well as induce sleep. Some mixtures of the various herbs are available in the forms of teas or powders and capsules.

Ginseng and licorice - Among other herbs, these are often used in Asia for asthma remedies. Generally these treatments work most effectively when taken consistently and for long periods of time.

Lobelia - Relax your bronchial smooth muscle with lobelia. This herb is very powerful. Occasional use should provide the desired effects.

Mullein Oil - Eliminate chest congestion by using mullein oil. For immediate effects, take mullein oil in a tea or in juice form.

Garlic - Prevent inflammation in your air passages by taking garlic. The active ingredient in garlic is alliin. It's a powerful antibiotic that suppresses the enzyme responsible for inflammation.

Kyolic - Take kyolic as an alternative to garlic. Although kyolic has the same anti-inflammatory properties as garlic, it's odorless and comes in tablet, capsule or extract form.

Primrose Oil - Use primrose oil, also known as evening primrose, to combat inflammation. Primrose oil contains essential fatty acids needed in the production of prostaglandins.

Honey - Honey is said to be one of the most effective home remedies for asthma. It is said that if a jug of honey is held under the nose of the asthmatic patient and he inhales the air that comes into contact with honey, he starts breathing easier and deeper. The effect lasts for about an hour or so.

Honey usually brings relief, whether the air flowing over it is inhaled or whether it is eaten or taken either in milk or water. It thins out accumulated mucus and helps its elimination from the respiratory passage.

Bitter Gourd Root - The roots of the bitter gourd plant have been used in folk medicine since ancient times. A teaspoon of the root paste, mixed with an equal amount of honey or juice of the holy basil, is an excellent expectorant, and is a remedy for asthma. It should be taken once every night for a month.

Figs - Figs are good for draining phlegm. Wash 3-4 dry figs with water. Soak in 1 cup of water. Eat these on an empty stomach and drink the water that the figs were soaked in also. Do not eat anything else for an hour at least. Do this for 2 months.

Indian Gooseberry - This fruit has proved valuable in asthma. Five grams of gooseberry mixed with one tablespoon of honey, forms an effective medicinal expectorant and tonic for the treatment of this disease. It should be taken every morning.

When fresh fruit is not available, dry gooseberry powder can be used, mixed with honey.

Finally, taking a good, high-quality multivitamin supplement every day is another one of the factors that contributes to the success of a natural asthma remedy.

The following teas have all been noted as good asthma remedies:

Other Natural Remedies

Diet

Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to the diet and decreasing both high-fat and high-sugar items also may be part of a process of natural asthma remedies. Controlling highly processed and chemical-laden foods may eliminate any simultaneously occurring food allergies that may be increasing the severity of your asthma conditions.

Avoid foods that are made with white flour and try to choose whole grain alternatives. Whole-wheat pastas, breads and even dinner rolls are a wonderful alternative to the highly processed white breads usually consumed.

Yoga

Oftentimes, stress triggers asthma symptoms. But breathing exercises used in yoga have been found to help some people with asthma control breathing and relieve stress, a common asthma trigger.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is another recommended method that many have had positive results with. Neuro Vision is a highly reputable company that offers an extremely affordable program that also comes with a 90-day guarantee.

Acupuncture

This Chinese medicine technique uses needles on pressure points to relieve symptoms. While some people with asthma have found that acupuncture can significantly reduce asthma attacks and improve lung function, studies are not conclusive.

Biofeedback

Learning to increase the amount of air inhaled has reduced fear and anxiety during an asthma attack for some people with asthma.

Natural asthma remedies can work very well for some individuals, usually those with mild to moderate asthma conditions. Even when using home health remedies, be sure to check with your health practitioner to ensure that there will be no complications or problems with existing medications. In addition, be sure to keep short-term or emergency inhalers available at all times in the case of a serious asthma attack.
