Cranberry Supplement - What Are The Benefits?

Cranberry

In traditional North American herbalism, a cranberry supplement was used for the treatment of bladder and kidney ailments.

Other Names: American Cranberry, Arandano, Mossberry, Vaccinium species

Even back in the 17th century, there is documented evidence of people using it as natural health remedies for the relief of blood disorders, stomach ailments, liver problems, vomiting, appetite loss, scurvy, and cancer.

Cranberry has long been recommended by herbalists as well as doctors to help prevent urinary tract infections (UTI's). The current proposed mechanism of action focuses primarily on cranberry's ability to prevent bacterial binding to host cell surface membranes.

Cranberries may also protect against heart disease and certain types of cancer, probably through the antioxidant and anti-tumor effects of flavonoids found in cranberry.

Other studies have found that cranberries are high in antioxidants as well as flavonoids and can help prevent kidney stones, stomach ulcers, gum disease, arteriosclerosis and cancer. The use of this type of supplement among individuals to prevent or treat bladder infections is a common practice for many natural health cures. Evidence suggests that it may relieve symptoms associated with bladder infections and may reduce the need for antibiotics.

Forms of Cranberry

You can get the benefits of cranberry from:

  • drinking cranberry juice
  • diluting cranberry concentrate with water
  • taking a cranberry supplement
  • using a cranberry tincture

A supplement would minimize the high calories that come from drinking cranberry juice.

Schiff Natural Cranberry Concentrate, available from EVitamins is the supplement of choice in our home for cranberries. There is no additional sugars in this supplement and it contains 8x more concentrate than whole cranberries. That's a whole lot of power!

It goes without saying, you can’t go wrong including cranberry as one of your all natural health supplements.
