Menopause Herbal Remedies - Help Me Feel Normal Again
For many women, menopause herbal remedies can be a life saver. Menopause can be a very trying period in your life. Crying fits, night sweats, hot flashes and headaches can make you wonder if you’re even the same person anymore. Fortunately you are, but because there is so much change going on in your body, you might not feel like it. Estrogen is the third most common drug prescribed in America. There are many women for whom hormone replacement therapy may not be necessary or may even be dangerous. For these women or women who are inclined to seek out natural health alternatives to begin with, menopause herbal remedies are ideal. There are herbal remedies for women that are pre-made you can purchase to help you through this period of your life. You can also purchase the herbs individually as you require them for individual symptoms. Menopause is not exactly the same experience for every woman so different people will need different remedies. What I have done is broken it down into symptoms associated with menopause and listed the herb/herbs that are best suited to alleviate that particular symptom. If you would prefer the no-fuss, no-muss pre-made remedies, we recommend
Mellopause
,
Dong Quai
, and
Mens-Reduce
from Native Remedies. They are each great on their own but you can also take them together for an enhanced effect. As with any herbal treatment, allow time for the effects to appear. Don’t forget about discussing things with your health practitioner. This information is not intended to replace medical advice.
MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS
Symptom: HOT FLASHESEarly physical symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, night sweats and sleeplessness. Those infamous hot flashes usually last between three and six minutes and may occur up to several times a day. Hot flashes can be disabling and physically draining. They can be associated with profuse sweating and can be quite embarrassing. They can also cause insomnia. Hot flashes generally begin suddenly on the chest, neck and face. Associated symptoms such as headache or pressure, nausea, and difficulty with concentration are common. Recommended Herb: BLACK COHOSH Symptom: INSOMNIA Insomnia means having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep or the feeling that your sleep was not adequate for you. For women who are having hot flashes at night, called night sweats, their sleep is broken by frequent awakening and therefore not refreshing or restorative. Generally once the hot flashes or night sweats are controlled a normal sleep pattern returns. Along with an herbal treatment, you might want to think about trying different behavioral techniques to help with your insomnia. The recommendations are as follows: - Go to bed only when sleepy. Do not wait up to a specified time.
- Use your bedroom only for sleep and sex. Do not read or watch TV in bed.
- If you're not sleeping, get out of bed. Get up and read in another room.
- Go to bed and get up at the same time each day.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening.
- Exercise and do enough during the day so you are tired at night.
Recommended Herbs: KAVA VALERIAN ROOT HOPS Symptom: MOOD SWINGS, ANXIETY AND IRRITABILITY These are fairly straight forward symptoms to understand. Feeling like you are on an emotional roller-coaster is a fairly accurate explanation. Upset at things that normally don’t upset you. Feeling normal one minute, and irritated the next. Or perhaps a feeling of nervousness or anxiety about something that normally wouldn’t make you think twice. These are all symptoms that go along with menopause. Recommended Herbs: KAVA VALERIAN ROOT ST. JOHN'S WORT PASSION FLOWER Symptom: FREQUENT VAGINAL AND BLADDER INFECTIONS There are also vaginal symptoms including vaginal dryness, thinning and shrinking which increases the risk of vaginal and bladder infections. At menopause, the decrease in estrogen affects the bladder. The bladder wall and the supporting ligaments atrophy (thin out). The bladder can drop and therefore inadequately empty; the residual urine is sitting in the bladder for a long time and is then prone to infection. The thin menopausal bladder lining is susceptible to bacteria. Your first line of defense here is a good
cranberry supplement.
It can be very helpful in this situation. Combined with a menopause herbal remedy, your chance of these types of infections are greatly reduced. Recommended Herbs: ECHINACEA UVA URSI (BEARBERRY) GOLDENSEAL Symptom: FATIGUE Another straight-forward symptom associated with menopause it fatigue. Feeling tired or drained all the time and having no energy or “zest”. Recommended Herb: KOREAN GINSENG Symptom: FORGETFULNESS What was I going to write here? Recommended Herbs: Some women combine these herbs with good results. GINKO BILOBA HAWTHORN Symptom: ABNORMAL HAIR GROWTH Recommended Herb: SAW PALMETTO
