What Can I Do About A Urinary Tract Infection?

What Is A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

This is an encroachment by the bacteria of the urinary tract which includes kidney, ureters, bladder or urethra. This bacterium enters the opening of the urethra and procreates in the urinary tract. This can be very painful and a major cause of distress in your life. If it is not contained in the earlier stages it is likely to spread to your kidneys, which can become a serious health issue.

UTI's are the second most common infection after respiratory infections. It is estimated that each year, 8 to 10 million people in the United States get a urinary tract infection, most of them women.

I'm a big fan of the many all natural supplements available to help cure this illness as well as prevent this painful type of infection.

Causes Of Urinary Tract Infections

  • Bacteria in the urethra

It is mainly caused when the bacteria from the digestive tract holds on to the opening of the urethra.

  • Through sexual intercourse

Sexual intercourse is another reason for a urinary tract infection. During a sexual intercourse the bacteria present in the vaginal tract is pushed inside the urethra by the movement of the penis.

  • Holding back the urge to urinate

Prolonging urination causes stretches the bladder. This stretching weakens the bladder - disallowing it to completely empty itself. The urine which remains in the bladder increases your chances of the infection.

Symptoms Of A Urinary Tract Infection

  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Passing small quantities of urine
  • Burning, painful feeling when urinating
  • Urine may look cloudy, milky, or red

If any of the following symptoms are present, it may be a sign that the urinary tract infection has spread to the kidneys:

  • Constant pain or pressure in the abdomen, side, or low back
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Chills

Natural Health Remedies For A Urinary Tract Infection

Listed below are individual herbs that can be used. Also available are pre-made remedies to help you treat a UTI. We highly recommend UTI Clear, and UT- Tonic made by Native Remedies. These two products are designed to support your bladder, urinary tract and urinary system health. I personally, can attest to the wonderful benefits of these products.

  • Horsetail - an astringent diuretic encouraging urine flow and halting bleeding from the urinary tract.

  • Marshmallow - soothes inflamed areas and enhances immune function to help fight off unwanted bacteria.

  • Nasturtium - the leaves, flowers, and especially the seeds contain natural antibiotics that may be helpful in preventing UTIs.

  • Horseradish Root - also contains an antibiotic substance along with a good dose of vitamin C, both of which may be helpful in treating this condition.

Do not use Goldenseal, Oregon Grape, or Uva Ursi if you are pregnant or nursing.

Also, although a UTI may feel better, it's important to proceed cautiously. During and after a UTI, always follow up with a health care provider. Symptoms may disappear, but the infectious bacteria can make its way up to the kidney and cause damage and even death.

    Other Home Health Remedies:

  • Cranberry supplement - an essential remedy for preventing and treating UTI’s. Drink 16-24 ounces per day of unsweetened juice or use capsules.

  • Essential Oils - You can make an essential oil by using equal parts of sandalwood, bergamot, tea tree, frankincense and juniper. Mix all these ingredients to make an oil to be rubbed over your bladder area. Continue this massaging technique for three to four days once the symptoms subside.

  • Tincture - In acute cases try having 1/2 tsp of tincture every hour. Severe infection needs severe measures. Blend equal parts of pipsissewa, buchu, echinacea, and uva ursi tinctures. Have 20 drops of this blended mixture every two hours for first two days and later 1 tsp four times a day, till you have completely recovered. Have a soothing tea such as marshmallow root to counter the strong antiseptic effect of urva ursi.

  • Hot compression - You can place a heating pad on the lower abdominal area to provide some relief to your pain.

  • Reflexology - Working on the bladder or kidney points can provide you some relief from this infection.

Remember that throughout the course of treating your UTI, it is very important for your system to consume plenty of water. It cleanses your body by diluting and flushing out the unwanted substance.
